NewEnglishCurriculumforChinesePrimarySchools andJunior/SeniorMiddleSchools ExperimentalVersiondraftedbytheEducationMinistryofthePRC Noteonthistranslation ThisEnglishversionofChina’snewcurriculumforEnglishisintendedforVSOvolunteerswho wouldliketofeelbetterinformedaboutadocumentthatiscentraltoourwork.However,it shouldinnowayberegardedasanofficialtranslation.Infact,itisneitherawordforword translationnorasummary.Theappendixtotheoriginal,whichincludeslistsofspecificlanguage itemstobemastered,hasbeenomitted,ashavesomeleveldescriptorsandsamplelearning activities.Despitetryingtomakeitmorereadable,thisversionreflectstherepetitivenatureof theoriginal,withthesamekeywordscroppingupoverandoveragain.Volunteersshouldalso refertothemoreofficial(butstillnotcompletelyofficial!)translationofthenewEnglish curriculumspecificallyforseniormiddleschoolsavailablefromtheProgrammeOffice.Any feedbackonthisversionwouldbewelcome. SinceChina’sreformandopening,thescaleofitsEnglisheducationhascontinuallygrown, attendedbysignificantachievementsinteachingandlearning.However,Englisheducationinits currentformisfailingtomeettheneedsofcontemporarysocialandeconomicdevelopment. ThecurrentroundofreformstotheEnglishcurriculumaimtoendthefollowingpractices: ● Over-emphasizingthetransmissionandexplanationofknowledgeaboutgrammarand vocabulary ● Neglectingtodevelopstudents’abilitytouselanguageforreal Intheirplace,thereformsaimtoestablishacurriculumthat: ● Developsstudents’comprehensivelanguagecompetence ● Motivatesstudents,isrelevanttotheirlifeexperiencesandcognitivelevel ● Promotestask-basedteachingmethods ● Involvesstudentsinexperiential,practical,participatoryandcooperativelearning ● Developsstudents’positiveattitudes,thinkingskills,practicalabilities,culturalawarenessand autonomythroughthelanguagelearningprocess 1.
