Day 1 日常生活 A Some years ago, writing in my diary used to be ausual activity. Iwould return from school and spend the expected half hour recording the day’s events, feelings, and impressions in my little blue diary. Idid not really need to express my emotions by way of words, but Igained acertain satisfaction from seeing my experiences forever recorded on paper. After all, isn’t collecting memories away of preserving the past? When Iwas thirteen years old, Iwent on along journey on foot in agreat valley, well-equipped with pens, adiary, and acamera. During the trip, Iwas busy recording every incident, name any place Icame across. Ifelt proud to be spending my time productively, dutifully preserving for future generations a detailed description of my travels. On my last night there, Iwandered out of my tent, diary in hand. The sky was clear and lit by the light of the moon, and the walls of the valley looked threatening behind their screen of shadows. I automatically took out my pen… At that point, Iunderstood that nothing Iwrote could ever match or replace the few seconds Iallowed myself to experience the dramatic beauty of the valley. All Iremembered of the previous few days were the boring characterizations Ihad set down in my diary. Now, Ionly write in my diary when Ineed to write down aspecial thought or feeling. Istill love to record ideas and quotations (经典语录) that touch me in books, or observations that are particularly meaningful. Itake pictures, but not very often—only of objects Ifind really beautiful. I’m no longer blindly satisfied with having something to remember when Igrow old. Irealize that life will simply pass me by if Istay behind the camera, busy preserving the present so as to live it in the future.
