In1864,whileThompsonwasservingintheMarineCorps,WilliamJamesCarltonhadstarted sellingadvertisingspaceinreligiousmagazines.TheagencywascalledCarltonandSmithalthough almostnothingisknownabouttheSmithpartner.In1868,CarltonhiredThompsonasabookkeeper. EventuallyThompsonfoundthatsolicitingandsalesweremuchmoreprofitableandhebecameavery effectivesalesmanforthesmallcompany.In1877,Thompsonboughttheagencyfor$500andrenamed itJ.WalterThompsonCompany.Notably,Thompsonpaid$800fortheCarltonandSmithfurnitureinthe sametransaction.
