Nineteenyearsago,almosttotheday,welostthreeastronautsinaterribleaccident ontheground.Butwe'veneverlostanastronautinflight.We'veneverhadatragedy likethis.Andperhapswe'veforgottenthecourageittookforthecrewoftheshuttle. Butthey,theChallengerSeven,wereawareofthedangers,butovercamethemand didtheirjobsbrilliantly.Wemournsevenheroes:MichaelSmith,DickScobee,Judith Resnik,RonaldMcNair,EllisonOnizuka,GregoryJarvis,andChristaMcAuliffe.We mourntheirlossasanationtogether. Forthefamiliesoftheseven,wecannotbear,asyoudo,thefullimpactofthis tragedy.Butwefeeltheloss,andwe'rethinkingaboutyousoverymuch.Yourd onesweredaringandbrave,andtheyhadthatspecialgrace,thatspecialspiritthat says,"Givemeachallenge,andI'llmeetitwithjoy."Theyhadahungertoexplore theuniverseanddiscoveritstruths.Theywishedtoserve,andtheydid.Theyserved allofus. We'vegrownusedtowondersinthiscentury.It'shardtodazzleus.Butfor twenty-fiveyearstheUnitedStatesspaceprogramhasbeendoingjustthat.We've grownusedtotheideaofspace,and,perhapsweforgetthatwe'veonlyjustbegun. We'restillpioneers.They,themembersoftheChallengercrew,werepioneers. AndIwanttosaysomethingtotheschoolchildrenofAmericawhowerewatching thelivecoverageoftheshuttle'stake-off.Iknowit'shardtounderstand,but sometimespainfulthingslikethishappen.It'sallpartoftheprocessofexploration
