ThedatawasobtainedfromthestudysponsoredbytheNationalInstituteon Aging.Thestudylookedat3,635subjects,allolderthan50,whomthe researchersdividedintothreegroups:thosewhodidn’treadbooks,thosewho readupto3.5hoursaweekandthosewhoreadmorethan3.5hoursaweek. Thefindingswereremarkable:onaverage,bookreaderssurvivedalmosttwo yearslongerthanthosewhodidn’tcrackopenabook.Themorethesubjects read,thelongertheylived,butaslittleas30minutesadaywasstill beneficialintermsofsurvival. Accountingforfactorssuchaseducationlevel,ineandhealthstatus,the studyfoundthatthosewhoreadmorethan3.5hoursweeklywere23percentless likelytodieduringthat12yearperiod.Thosewhoreadupto3.5hours—an averageofahalfhouraday—were17percentlesslikely. “Inotherwords,justlikeahealthydietandexercise,booksappearto promoteasignificantsurvivaladvantage,”theauthorsconcluded. Whyorhowthat’sthecaseremainsunclear;theresearchshowedonlyan associationbetweenbookreadingandlongevity,notacausalrelationship.But thefindingsarenotsosurprising.Otherrecentresearchshowedthatreading novelsappearstoincreasebothbrainconnectivityandsympathy.
