In ancient times, people did not have surnames, and they were identified only by their given names, which were usually based on their family or personal traits. For example, aperson might be called "John, son of James," or "Mary the Red-haired." As societies became more complex and populations grew, it became necessary to have amore systematic way of distinguishing people. Surnames were invented to solve this problem. The use of surnames began in China around 2852 BC, during the reign of Emperor Fu Xi. The Chinese used their father's name as their surname, and this tradition is still followed by many Chinese people today. In Europe, surnames began to be adopted during the Middle Ages, around the 11th century. They were first used by nobles and wealthy landowners to distinguish themselves from commoners. Later, they became more widespread, and the use of surnames became mandatory in many countries. 2. The Meanings of Surnames
