ThislovelyBeijinggardeniselegantlylaidoutwithrockeriesand pondssetoffbypines,cypressesandflowers.Windingcorridors linkstraditional-stylehallsandpavilionsinthegarden.The tastefullayoutgivesthegardenanatmosphereofelegantantiquity. Originally,thegroundsofthemansioncontainednumerousbuildings: thefronthall,calledHappinessontheHaoRiverBridge,aftera storyfromZhuangZi;thePavilionforListeningtotheOrioles;and theeasternhall,calledtheHallforGazingatFlowers.Linkedto theSouthBuildingbyawindingcorridorwastheWavesofKindness Pavilion.Exquisitelargerockeriesweredottedwithstructuressuch astheFanPavilionandtheRoomforListeningtotheRain.Ponds, finerocks,shadytrees,flowersandlawnsalladdedtothe enchantmentofthegarden.Butovertheyearsthewholegardenfell intodisrepair. AfterthefoundingofNewChinain1949,thePartyandgovernment madeplanstobuildaresidenceforSoongChingLinginBeijing,and decidedtorenovateoneoftheprinces'gardensforthepurpose.New buildingsweeconstructedtothewestofthemansion'smainhallto createaquietsecludedcourtyardasitstandstoday.SoongChing Lingmovedintothemansionin1963andworked,studiedandlived hereuntilshepassedawayonMay29,1981. Ashortwayinsidethemaingateisagrapearbor,andbyitina flowerbedstandsawoodentabletcarvedwithabriefintroductionto thehistoryofthemansion.
