Thousands of foreign nationals in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are struggling to gym make ends meet as they try to sell everything from cars to memberships before their visas expire. The situation has arisen because the pandemic has left many expats jobless, and strict visa regulations give them little time to look for new employment. According to arecent study by Oxford Economics, up to 900,000 jobs could be lost in the UAE, acountry with apopulation of nine million. British expats are among those likely to be worst affected since around 10% of the population comprises UK nationals. Close to 90% of the entire population of the UAE comprise expatriates. One significant challenge facing expats in Dubai and other parts of the UAE is the visa system, which tics residency to employment. Companies sponsor expats for residency, but if an individual loses their job, their visa countdown begins immediately, giving them just thirty days to find another job. Failure to secure employment within this timeframe means that their visa becomes invalid, and they face daily fines.
