Introduction: Thepowerqualitydisturbancesintheelectricaldistribution systemcanbecategorizedintothreetypes,namelyvoltage disturbances,currentdisturbances,andfrequencydisturbances. Thesedisturbancesmayleadtoanunstablepowersystem, economiclosses,equipmentfailures,andultimately,unsatisfied customers.Severaldevicesandtechniqueshavebeenproposed andimplementedtomitigatethepowerqualityproblems.The UPQCisonesuchdevicewhichiscapableofmitigatingvoltage andcurrentdisturbancessimultaneously. TheUPQCiscomposedoftwoshuntlegsandoneseriesleg. Theshuntlegsareresponsibleformitigatingvoltagedisturbances, whiletheserieslegisresponsibleformitigatingcurrent disturbances.TheUPQCisgenerallyimplementedusingthe instantaneousreactivepowertheoryorthesynchronousrotating frametheory. Theinstantaneousreactivepowertheoryiswidelyusedin UPQCimplementation.However,thesynchronousrotatingframe controlstrategyisgainingpopularityasithasseveraladvantages overtheinstantaneousreactivepowertheory.Thesynchronous rotatingframecontrolstrategyisbasedonthetransformationof thethree-phasevoltageandcurrentsignalstothesynchronous rotatingframe.Inthisframe,thecontrolalgorithmsaremore straightforwardandofferbettercontroloverthepowerquality disturbancescomparedtothetraditionaltheory.
