takeofforlanding.Thisattitudeisalsoanadvantageonpropeller-drivenplanessinceitprovidesalargeclearancebetweenthepropellertipsandtheground.Furthermore,taildraggerplanesaregenerallyeasierforgroundpersonneltomaneuveraroundinconfinedspaceslikeahangar.However,thegreatestliabilityofthislandinggearlayoutisitshandlingcharacteristics.Thisdesignisinherentlyunstablebecausetheplane''scenterofgravityislocatedbehindthetwomaingear.Iftheplaneislandingandonewheeltouchesdownfirst,theplanehasatendencytoveeroffinthedirectionofthatwheel.Thisbehaviorcancausetheaircrafttoturninanincreasinglytighter"groundloop"thatmayeventuallyresultinscrapingawingtipontheground,collapsingthegear,orveeringofftherunway.Landingataildraggercanbedifficultsincethepilotmustlineuphisapproachverycarefullywhilemakingconstantrudderadjustmentstokeeptheplaneonastraightpathuntilitcomestoastop.Manytaildraggerdesignsalleviatethesehandlingproblemsbyfittingatailwheelthatcanbelockedinsteadofswivelingonacastor.Lockingthetailwheelhelpskeeptheplanerollinginastraightlineduringlanding.Anotherdisadvantageofthetaildraggerispoorpilotvisibilityduringtaxiingsinceheisforcedtopeeroveranosethatistiltedupwardatasteepangle.Itisalsooftendifficulttoloadorunloadheavycargosbecauseofthesteepslopeofthecabinfloor.Similarly,pilotsandpassengersareforcedtowalkuphillduringboardinganddownhillafterarrival.Manyaircraftalsorelyongravitytobringfuelfromtankstotheengine,andsomeplaneshavebeenknowntohavedifficultystartingtheenginebecauseitisuphillfromthefuelsupply.
