Traditionally,theevaluationofacompound'stoxicityhas beencarriedoutthroughlaboratoryassays,whicharecostly, time-consuming,andrequiretheuseofliveanimals.Recently, computer-basedmethodshaveemergedasapromising alternativetoexperimentalapproaches.Computermodelscanbe usedtopredictthetoxicityofcompoundsbasedontheirchemical propertiesandstructureandcanhelpreducetheuseoflive animalsintoxicologicalstudies.Inthispaper,wewillreviewrecent studiesthatusedcomputermodelstopredicttheecotoxicityof organiccompoundsinterrestrialandaquaticenvironments. TerrestrialEnvironment Thetoxicityoforganiccompoundsintheterrestrial environmentisasignificantconcern,asthesecompoundscan accumulateinsoilandcontaminategroundwater.Several computermodelshavebeendevelopedtopredictthetoxicityof organiccompoundsinthesoil,includingtheToxicityEstimation SoftwareTool(TEST)andthePesticidePropertiesDatabase (PPDB).Thesemodelsuseacombinationofphysicochemical, structural,andenvironmentaldatatoestimateacompound's toxicity.
