Earlyoninthesearch,therewererelativelyfewscientistsstudyingthem. Whatwasclearwasthattherivergiantswereshrinkinginnumber, threatenedbyahostoffactorsincludingoverfishing,waterpollution,andthe presenceofdams,whichblockmigratingfishfromcompletingtheirlifecycles.
