英语教学中的素质教育 胡旭霞 Chinese Children 九八年暑假我让高一的学生读一本书,题为《中国孩子在美国》( In The United States )。这是本中英文对照的文集,所有文章都是生活在美国的中国孩 __ 子写的,集中反映了他们在异国他乡的生活和。它既是了解美国文化的一个窗口,也是国 内中学生学英语的课外好读物。我要求学生在暑假的八个星期里读完书中八个专栏的小文章 (基本要求,人人要做到)并写出相应的读书心得邮寄给我(较高要求,可英文,可中文, 自觉自愿完成)。在头一个星期里我陆续收到了十三封来信。其中不乏有几篇很像样的英文 13 书面表达,但对我触动最深的还是封中唯一的一篇用汉语写的文章。文章的主要内容如 下: 暑假刚刚开始,学校生活仍然记忆忧新,所以我选择学校生活作为我的第一篇读后感。 读完这个专栏的九篇文章后,我的第一感觉就是美国学生的学校生活太生动,太富有情 趣了。其中《一堂特别的课》,《中国文化日》等都是我们所未能领略到的,而《牙齿的实 __ 验》等体现了美国的教育更注重与实际生活相。再有《说说我的美国学校》一文将美国学 校教育与中国学校教育作了个比较,如: Schools in the US generally do not h__e aspecific teaching plan for teachers to follow, and they __rtainly don't h__e aset of textbooks that are taught by all school districts throughout the country. That is why textbooks vary greatly from school to school, and from teacher to teacher even though they are all teaching the same su__ect in the same grade. Some schools provide books to use, but teachers do not strictly follow them. They only use them as areferen__, and enjoy pointing out mistakes and wrong infor__tion given in the books. They often share their own points of view with their students. Teaching like this has __ny advantages. Teachers can bring out their expertise, fully elaborating their most familiar areas. Students are more interested in what they are studying. Also this flexible teaching style benefits students in the development of critical thinking skills and the ability to apply them. Exams in American schools are much less strict than those in China. Teaching is flexible, so are exams. Even if you memorized the whole textbook it might bot be of much help in the exams. In China it is avery different story. When preparing for exams, the students' brains are packed full like awarehouse, with every detail of what was taught. -1 - 19
