Similarly, head pole materials also corrode at pinholes and the corrosion products were found to distribute across the poles and beyond after. In addition, Heads and media subjected to contact-start-stop(CSS)testing were more susceptible to corrosion. Clusters of corrosion spots and overcoat flaking or fracture were observed on wear track of the disk media. Overcoat fracture and damage is even more severe for the recording heads. Chemical analysis and imaging of the corrosion products using the time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometer (TOF-SIMS) and Auger electron spectrometer(AES)
