Japanese Women Want aLaw Against Mandatory Heels at Work Japan is the latest battleground for women revolting against the tyranny of high heels, as a fledgling movement seeks government protection from workplaces that require the footwear. Thousands of supporters have rallied behind the hashtag #KuToo -a pun based on the Japanese words for shoe (kutsu) and pain (kutsuu). It was started by Yumi Ishikawa, a32-year-old actress who said she had to change career paths after having difficulty standing in heels for eight hours during training at ahotel. She submitted apetition to the labor ministry this week, signed by more than 18,000 people, that called for alaw barring employers from forcing women to wear high heels. In Japan, acountry of rigid gender roles, the government has tried with mixed success to empower women in the workplace, and the #KuToo movement is areminder of what some see as avery specific obstacle in their path. As in other countries, high heels are seen by plenty of women as empowering and attractive, entirely worth any discomfort. It's anever-ending debate. For some women, it's amatter of livelihood, not optics. Those unable or unwilling to grin and bear 一 the pain must divert themselves away from industries where the footwear is expected but only expected for women, while men wear perfectly comfortable shoes. 【词汇过关】 请写出下面文单词在文章中的中文意思。 1 .mandatory ['maendoto ri ]adj. 2 : .heel[hi 1]n. _________________________ 3 .tyranny [' ti roni]n. ____________________________ 4 .fledgling [Tledj li rj ]adj. ___________________________ 5 .rally [Yaeli ]vi. __________________________ 6 .submit [sob'mi t]vt. ___________________________ 7 : .bar [ba ]vt. __________________________ 8 .rigid ['ri dj Id ]adj. ____________________________ 9 .empower [I m'pau o] vt. ___________________________ 10 .rerninder [ri 'mal nds ]n. ____________________________ 11 : .worth [w3 0]adj. ___________________________ 12 .grin [grl n]vi. ___________________________ 【词块学习】 请从文章中找到下面中文相对应的文词块。 1 .反抗 ___________________________________________ 2 ・・・ .免受...之害 _______________________________________ 3 .做某事有困难 ____________________________________________ 4 .厚生劳动省 ___________________________________________ 5 呼吁 ___________________________________________ . 成败参半;喜忧参半 ___________________________________________ 6 ,转移某物 _________________________________________ 7 拓展练习 阅读理解 Most college campuses offer students the opportunity to get involved in awide variety of clubs and organizations.
