Withsomanywomendead,Ifoundmyselfbusierthanever.Ihadtohelpdothecookingand thelaundryforthemenandboyswhohadIosttheirwivesormothers.InMarchof1621,a NativeAmericancametoourvillage.HisnamewasSamoset.Hewalkedintothevillage shouting:"Welcome!Welcome!Englishmen!"Eventhoughitwasaverycoldandwindyday, Samosetwasnakedexceptforaclotharoundhiswaistandmoccasinsonhisfeet.Themen talkedtoSamosetforaIongtime.Samosetleftthenextdayandhesaidhewouldsoonreturn. Afterseveraldays,SamosetdidreturnwithanotherNativeAmericanwhoamazedusallwithhis flawlessEnglish.HisnamewasSquanto,andhesaidhewasthelastsurvivingmemberofthe Patuxettribe.Squantostayedwithusthatwholespringandsummer.Hetaughtourmenhowto huntandhowtofish.Hetaughtthewomenhowtoplantandcultivatecorn,squash,andbeans. WelearnedthatourseedsfromEnglanddidnotgrowverywellintheNewWorld,butSquanto showedusthatifweplantedourseedswithherring,thentheywouldgrow.Squantohelpedusto makefriendswiththeneighboringtribes.Withhishelp,wesignedapeacetreatywithKing Massasoit.SquantoandotherNativeAmericansalsohelpeduswithourcrops.Withtheirhelp, ourcorn,squash,andbeansdidverywellthatnextyear.Tocelebrateourbountifulharvest,we invitedthegreatKingMassasoitandhisadvisorstoourviliage.Thefeastlastedforthreedays.
