Introduction Rockmassesareheterogeneousandanisotropicmaterials, andtheirmechanicalbehaviorisinfluencedbyvariousfactors suchasmineralogy,microstructure,andgeologicalhistory. Understandinghowthesefactorsaffectthedeformationand failurebehaviorofrocksisessentialfordesigningsafeandreliable rockengineeringprojects.Tothisend,severalconstitutivemodels havebeenproposedtodescribethemechanicalbehaviorofrocks, includingelasticity-basedmodels,plasticity-basedmodels,and damage-basedmodels.Amongthesemodels,damage-based modelshavereceivedconsiderableattentioninrecentyearsdue totheirabilitytocapturetheprogressivedegradationofrock materialsunderloading. Theclassicaldamagemodels,suchastheMohr-Coulomb modelandtheHoek-Brownmodel,donotaccountforthe heterogeneityofrockmaterials,whichcanleadtoinaccurate predictionsoftherock'sdeformationandfailurebehavior. Therefore,thereisaneedformorerealisticmodelsthatconsider theeffectsofmaterialheterogeneityanddamageaccumulation.
