Methodology: Thestudyusedamixed-methodsdesign,includinga vocabularytest,areadingtask,andapost-readinginterview.The vocabularytestwasusedtomeasuretheparticipants'vocabulary size,vocabularydepth,andvocabularyknowledge.Thereading taskaskedparticipantstoreadanacademictextandidentify unfamiliarwords.Thepost-readinginterviewwasusedto investigateparticipants'awarenessoftheunfamiliarwordsthey encounteredwhilereading. Participants: Theparticipantsinthisstudywere50Englishmajorsfroma universityinChina,ranginginagefrom18to22.Theywereallat theintermediatelevelofEnglishproficiencybasedontheir placementtestscores. Results: Theresultsshowedthattheparticipants'language proficiency,vocabularysize,vocabularydepth,andvocabulary knowledgewerepositivelycorrelatedwiththeirabilitytoacquire newvocabularyincidentallywhilereading.Higherlanguage proficiencyfacilitatedfasterprocessingofwrittenlanguageanda widerrangeofcomprehensionstrategies.Greatervocabularysize anddepthincreasedthelikelihoodofencounteringand recognizingunknownwords,whilegreatervocabularyknowledge
