Theoreticalbackground: Electromagneticultrasonictransducersoperatebyinducing aneddycurrentinthesampletobetested,thendetectingthe resultingultrasonicwaves.Thisisaccomplishedusingacoilthat generatesamagneticfieldwhenanelectricalcurrentisapplied.In anon-magneticmetalmaterialspiralcoil,thismagneticfieldis notuniformandvariesinstrengthalongthelengthofthecoil. Thisnon-uniformitycanleadtopoorcouplingwiththesample, whichinturnreducestheefficiencyofthetransducer. Couplingbetweenthecoilandthesamplecanbequantified usingaparameterknownasthetransferimpedance.This parameterrepresentstheratioofthevoltageinducedinthecoil tothecurrentflowingthroughthesample.Ahightransfer impedanceindicatespoorcoupling,whilealowtransfer impedanceindicatesgoodcoupling.
