Iam in sales, working for aFortune 200 pany that provides payroll and human resources services to mid sized panies. We talk about the benefits of outsourcing those administrative functions so they can focus on their more mission-critical objectives. 2. How did you get your current job? Through afriend Iplayed soccer with about 8years ago. 3. What, if any, obstacles did you face trying to get your first job in this field? Ihad to convince the general manager of the pany that Icould sell even though Ihad no prior sales experience. 4. What advice would you give to students interested in working in your field? Be aggressive enough on the interview and try closing the interview by asking good questions to see if they feel you are agood candidate. Nothing is worse than someone who says, "I just want to try sales because Ithink Id be good at it." 5. What are some of the activities you were involved in while at SLU? Phi Kappa Sigma Fraternity, intramural sports, Hill News editor, just about everything 6. How can students best prepare themselves while still at SLU? Take advantage of opportunities to meet alumni and gain experience through internships or summer jobs in your field. Also, have an open mind about what careers are out there because you probably don't know what you want to do at 18 or 19 years old. 7. In retrospect, is there anything you would have done differently with regard to your career? Iwish Iwould have considered working for alarge national pany earlier on. Ilearned alot being with asmall pany but there are many benefits abig pany brings to the table. 8. What are your future plans? Ed like to stay with this pany because of the long-term opportunity to build wealth (stock options, etc), but Ialways have an open eye. Iknow Iwant to stay in sales but may look at some opportunities in training or management in the future. 9. Are you willing to talk with students interested in acareer in your field? Iam afinancial advisor with American Express. In fact, Iam an independent contractor which means that Iown my practice and as my practice grows, so does my equity in my business. Iget to wear many hats in my day to day activities. My job is to build a successful financial planning practice which involves learning how to do financial planning, marketing my services in order to gain clients, and servicing my existing clients, all the while learning how to run abusiness. Even though Iwork for such alarge pany, it feels as if Irun my own small business. That's arare opportunity in this world! It is agift to have such autonomy in the working world but still have the support and resources of aFortune 50 pany. 2. How did you get your current job? Ifound the position amongst the turmoil of acareer change. Ihad no idea what Iwanted to do professionally and was hoping to find the answers at acareer fair in Boston. Iwas intrigued by the job description and the recruiter captivated my attention when she told me that American Express can train the content of the career, they are looking for the right kind of person. Ithen went to the career orientation meeting at American Express and quickly found myself making my way through the interview process. The rest is history.
