Among the various English translations, those by Yang Xianyi and Gladys Yang, and by David Hawkes and John Minford, are regarded as the most influential and widely read versions. However, little attention has been paid to the translation strategies employed in these translations, especially in terms of the expression of storytelling language, which is aunique feature of the original text. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the translation strategies adopted by Yang and Huo, and their effectiveness in conveying the storytelling language of ADream of Red Mansions. The study will use a corpus-based approach, analyzing selected sections of the text, and comparing the translations with the original Chinese text to identify and evaluate the translation techniques used. Research questions: 1. What are the characteristics of storytelling language in ADream of Red Mansions? 2. What translation strategies did Yang and Huo use to express the storytelling language in their English translations? 3. What are the similarities and differences between the two translations in terms of translating storytelling language? 4. How effective were the translation strategies used by Yang and Huo in conveying the storytelling language of ADream of Red Mansions in their English translations?
