Background 1,5-Pentanediolcanbesynthesizedusingdifferentmethodssuchas hydrogenationofglutaricacid,hydroformylationof1,4-dichlorobutane,and carbonylationof1,4-diacetoxybutane,amongothers.However,theShanghai PetrochemicalDevelopmentCompanyLimitedutilizesthehydrogenationof glutaricacidmethodtoproducethecompound. SynthesisProcess Theprocessinvolvesthreemainstages,namely,thevapor-phasedehydration ofglutaricacid,gas-phasehydrogenation,andpurification. Firstly,glutaricacidissubjectedtovapor-phasedehydrationwhichresultsin theformationofglutaconicanhydride.Thereactioniscarriedoutbyheating theglutaricacidatatemperatureofabout220°Cuntilitisconvertedtothe anhydride.Thechemicalreactionisasfollows: C5H8O4→C5H4O3+H2O Secondly,gas-phasehydrogenationiscarriedouttoreducetheglutaconic anhydrideto1,5-pentanediol.Hydrogenationiscarriedoutatahydrogento glutaconicanhydridemolarratioofabout2:1.Thereactioniscarriedoutata temperaturerangeofabout120°Cto160°C,andapressurerangingfrom3to 5MPa.Thereactionisexothermicinnatureandmustbecarriedoutinthe presenceofacatalystsuchaspalladiumonactivatedcarbon.Thechemical reactionisasfollows: C5H4O3+4H2→C5H12O2 Finally,purificationiscarriedouttoremoveanyimpuritiespresent.The purificationprocessinvolvesdistillationofthe1,5-pentanediolformedinthe previousstep.Theresultingproductisacolorlessliquidwithaboilingpointof about225°Candamolecularweightof104.15g/mol.
